This eighteenth century French Provincial commode is an eighteenth century Louis XV style chest of drawers in painted timber, marble, and brass. The piece has a serpentine front and sits on short cabriole legs, featuring a thick grey marble top above four drawers arranged as two smaller drawers over two long drawers. The distressed paint finish displays a palette of muted pink and grey with visible wear to the surfaces. Ornate rococo brass handles and decorative keyhole escutcheons adorn each drawer front, complementing the curved moulding lines of the frame. Practical dimensions are 82 cm high, 130 cm wide, and 66 cm deep, with a marble top measuring 3 cm in thickness. This chest of drawers suits a bedroom, hallway, or living room as a functional storage surface.

FAQs

A French painted commode is a low chest of drawers originating in 18th-century France, designed with decorative painted finishes, ornamental brass fittings, and frequently topped with marble.

These commodes are usually constructed with a solid timber frame featuring a carved serpentine front, topped with a shaped marble slab and fitted with cast brass handles and escutcheons.

Authentic period pieces generally feature hand-dovetailed drawer construction, hand-planed rear framing, custom marble tops contoured to the body shape, and unpolished brass hardware exhibiting natural oxidisation.

Position the commode as a focal point in an entryway, bedroom, or living room, pairing its textured painted patina with abstract artwork, architectural lamps, or modern ceramic vessels to create visual contrast.

Dust surfaces regularly with a clean microfibre cloth, clean the marble surface using pH-neutral stone cleaner, protect against acidic substances, and avoid abrasive chemical treatments on the painted finish.
