Chinese Bronze Dragon Scholar’s Paperweight / Brush Rest, C.1900

1900 - 1920
Description

Chinese Bronze Dragon Scholar’s Paperweight / Brush Rest, c.1900

An unusual Chinese cast bronze scholar’s object modelled as a recumbent mythical dragon, dating to the late Qing / early Republic period.

The substantial creature is finely modelled with a powerful dragon head, prominent brows and horns, open mouth, scrolling mane and a scaled body terminating in a curled tail. Further detailing extends across the back, legs and feet.

Of compact but notably heavy construction, weighing approximately 412 grams at only 9cm long, the piece was most likely intended as a scholar’s desk paperweight or possibly a brush rest.

The bronze displays an attractive naturally varied surface with deep brown patination, warmer copper-brown wear to the raised areas and areas of green oxidation within the recesses.

Chinese scholar’s objects were traditionally produced in numerous forms, with dragons and other auspicious mythical creatures particularly favoured as paperweights and brush rests.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1900s:
Green oxidisation settled in the crevices: gradual ageing of the copper alloy.
Raised details rubbed through to bare reddish metal: many years of handling.
Softened casting definition on the mane and scales: typical late Qing bronze work.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This Chinese scholar’s paperweight and brush rest takes the form of a recumbent mythical dragon, originating from the late Qing Dynasty around 1900. Made from cast bronze, the object displays a deep reddish-brown patination over its textured scales, with warmer copper-brown highlights on the raised areas and green oxidation settling within the recesses. The creature possesses a powerful dragon head with prominent brows and horns, an open mouth, a scrolling mane, detailed legs and feet, and a scaled body that ends in a curled tail. Scratches, surface wear, and natural patination mark the antique piece throughout its compact body. Measuring 3.5 cm high, 9 cm wide, and 4 cm deep, the object fits neatly upon an office desk or library table to secure loose documents or support writing brushes.

Scholars studio objects were functional and decorative implements used by literary elites in imperial China for calligraphy, painting, and desk organization. These items, including paperweights and brush rests, reflected the owners taste, status, and appreciation for traditional artistic motifs.

Late Qing dynasty brush rests and paperweights were commonly crafted from cast bronze, jade, porcelain, and carved wood. Bronze examples were typically created using lost-wax casting methods and finished with dark or reddish patination.

Authentication involves evaluating the weight, casting precision, wear patterns, and surface patination. Original pieces display natural surface wear from handling, smooth casting lines, and genuine oxidisation in recessed details rather than artificially applied chemicals.

A bronze paperweight functions well on an executive office desk, atop stacked art books on a coffee table, or integrated into a curated bookshelf display. Its dark metal tone complements dark wood, leather, and neutral contemporary schemes.

Bronze objects should be dusted regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth to remove surface debris. Avoid harsh chemicals, liquid polishes, or abrasive materials, which can strip the original surface patina and oxidisation.
