This nineteenth-century patinated bronze study depicts the French poet Joachim de Bellay, sculpted by Leofanti Adolphe around 1870. The standing figure wears a ruffled collar, a buttoned doublet, and slashed hose over ballooned breeches, with a cloak draped over the shoulders and a book held in the left hand. The work has a dark brown finish with soft highlights and stands upon an integral rectangular base that rests on irregular ground. The sculpture measures 60 cm high, 28 cm wide, and 19 cm deep. Placed in a gentleman's library, this bronze study suits a mantelpiece or a desktop display. The composition captures the sixteenth-century poet with a short beard and moustache, standing with one hand on his hip and another book positioned near his feet on the textured plinth.

During the 19th century in France, sculptors frequently created detailed bronze representations of prominent historical, literary, and cultural figures, typically executed in the Renaissance Revival style using traditional casting techniques.

These statuettes were cast in copper-alloy bronze using either the lost-wax (cire perdue) or sand-casting method, followed by hand-chisel work and chemical patination to accentuate garment details and surface textures.

Authentic period bronzes exhibit precise hand-chiseled tooling, age-appropriate wear to the original patina, substantial weight, crisp seam integration, and occasionally foundry marks or artist signatures along the base.

A historical bronze figure functions effectively as a focal point on a mantelpiece, executive desk, or within a library display, creating tonal contrast when set against contemporary backdrops or minimalist joinery.

Routine care involves light dusting with a dry, soft-bristle brush or lint-free cloth. Chemical cleaners and abrasive polishes should be avoided to prevent stripping the original surface patina; an annual application of microcrystalline wax provides protection.
