The original Marly horses were sculpted in marble by Guillaume Coustou in 1739 for the trough at the Chateau de Marly. During the 19th century, French foundries produced reduced-scale bronze reproductions of these equestrian figures for private art collectors.

These sculptures were crafted from cast bronze using lost-wax or sand casting techniques. The metal surface was finished with a dark brown or dark green patination to protect the bronze and accentuate sculpted details.

Authentic 19th-century castings feature crisp hand-chased definition in the mane and musculature, internal casting seams visible under the hollow base, and natural age-related patination in recessed areas. Foundry marks or inscribed signatures after Coustou may also be present.

A pair of bronze horses can be placed symmetrically on a sideboard, console table, or fireplace mantelpiece to establish balance. They function as classic focal points in traditional, dark academia, or eclectic living spaces.
