This large pair of nineteenth century French bronze sculptures depicts rearing horses restrained by groom figures, cast after Guillaume Coustou the elder. Modelled in a classical style, the figures display detailed musculature, flowing mannes, and animal skins draped over the mounts, all raised on naturalistic irregular bases. The bronze material carries a dark brown patinated finish with subtle highlights across the high points of the muscular forms. Measuring 57 cm high, 50 cm wide, and 23 cm deep, these substantial display pieces command visual interest in a traditional interior. They suit placement upon a large sideboard top within a gentleman's library or study, where they introduce sculptural weight and classical proportion to the room.
