FAQs

Heriz carpets originate from the Heris region in Northwest Iran, near Tabriz. Produced by village weavers, these rugs became widely recognised in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries for their distinctive geometric interpretations of traditional floral and medallion patterns.

Heriz carpets are hand-knotted using durable wool pile woven onto a thick cotton warp and weft foundation. The wool was historically dyed using local plant and mineral dyes, resulting in saturated terracotta, deep blue, and ivory tones.

Authentic Heriz rugs feature bold, angular geometric designs rather than smooth curvilinear lines, often centred around a large rectilinear medallion with prominent corner spandrels. The weave is durable with a thick hand-knotted pile and subtle colour variations known as abrash.

A Heriz carpet serves as a visual anchor in living rooms, dining rooms, or large hallways. The bold geometric patterns and muted terracotta tones pair equally well with traditional dark timber furniture or modern, minimalist upholstery.

Regular maintenance requires vacuuming gently using suction only, avoiding beater bars that can snag the wool fibres. Spills should be blotted immediately with a clean dry cloth, and professional cleaning by a rug specialist should be conducted every few years.
