FAQs

A Louis Philippe commode is a 19th-century French chest of drawers characterised by clean, understated lines, a concealed top frieze drawer, rounded upper mouldings, and frequently a fitted marble top.

These commodes typically feature solid oak or pine secondary frames veneered in rich timbers such as flame walnut, mahogany, or rosewood, topped with thick cut slabs of Belgian dark marble or Saint Anne grey marble.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, original locks and brass key escutcheons, unpolished undersides on the marble slab, and natural wood shrinkage along the back casing or drawer bases.

A marble top commode serves as a striking focal point in a contemporary hallway, living space, or bedroom when paired with modern artwork framed above and clean-lined table lamps.

Wipe the marble top with a soft, damp cloth and neutral pH soap, ensuring acid-based liquids are wiped away immediately to prevent etching; nourish the wood veneer using high-grade beeswax polish applied along the grain.
