This French Louis Philippe commode from around 1880 is made of dark brown mahogany with a grey marble top and stands on a plinth base. The piece incorporates an ogee frieze drawer above three main drawers, fitted with small brass keyhole escutcheons and simple drop handles. The dark wood shows subtle grain patterns, and the plinth base is supported by small block feet. Measuring 99 cm high, 131 cm wide, and 59 cm deep, the chest of drawers provides ample storage for a bedroom, hallway, or living room surface. In a contemporary home, this traditional chest of drawers serves well as a statement piece in a hallway or a functional storage unit in a bedroom. The smooth marble top offers a durable surface for lamps, decorative items, or everyday essentials, while the generous drawer capacity keeps personal belongings organised. The classic French chateau aesthetic complements both traditional interiors and modern eclectic schemes, bringing a sense of historical character and practical utility to the living space.

Originating in France during the reign of King Louis Philippe (18301848), this style features clean, understated lines, soft curves, a grey or white marble top, and an overarching focus on displaying rich timber veneers rather than heavy carving.

French commodes from the nineteenth century were typically built using solid pine or oak carcases veneered with flame mahogany or walnut, and were surmounted by thick cut slabs of marble such as Sainte-Anne or Carrara.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, original locks with brass keyhole escutcheons, hand-planed back panels, and a concealed upper frieze drawer positioned directly below the marble top.

A marble-topped mahogany commode functions well in a hallway, bedroom, or living room as a grounding anchor, paired with contemporary artwork, minimalist ceramic lamps, or modern sculptural mirrors to balance the dark timber.

Dust timber surfaces regularly with a soft cloth and apply beeswax polish annually to preserve the patina; marble surfaces should be cleaned using a damp cloth with pH-neutral soap, avoiding acidic spillages that can etch the stone.
