Late Victorian and early 20th-century metal bedsteads in the Art Nouveau style incorporate sinuous whiplash motifs, stylized floral shapes, and organic curves crafted into iron frames, often finished with polished brass top rails and decorative finials.

These bedsteads were constructed using cast iron for structural corner joints and decorative mouldings, wrought iron for slender vertical spindles, and drawn brass tubing for top rails and end caps.

Authentic period examples feature heavy cast-iron corner joints known as chilled castings or dovetails, unthreaded brass fittings secured with pins or tapered screws, and original hand-cut iron tubing rather than modern uniform steel dimensions.

Pair the dark metal structure with crisp white cotton bedding, textured wool blankets, and contemporary botanical wall coverings to create contrast against the graphic silhouette of the ironwork.

Clean painted iron surfaces with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and gentle vacuuming, while applying a thin coat of clear microcrystalline wax to brass fittings to protect the natural oxidisation without removing aged patina.
