Large Chinese Qing Archaistic Bronze Ding Tripod Censer with Taotie Decoration 30cm

19th century
Description

A substantial Chinese archaistic bronze tripod vessel or censer (ding), probably Qing dynasty, inspired by the ancient ritual bronzes of the Shang and Zhou periods.

The rounded body is raised on three tall columnar legs and surmounted by a pair of imposing upright loop handles. The body is decorated with a broad archaistic register of stylised taotie masks surrounded by dense leiwen or thunder-pattern ornament.

Ding vessels were among the most important forms of ancient Chinese ritual bronze. Their distinctive shapes and decoration were subsequently revived by Chinese craftsmen, becoming particularly admired by scholars, antiquarians and collectors during the Ming and Qing dynasties.

This substantial example has a particularly strong architectural form, with its elongated legs, large handles and dark patinated surface giving it considerable decorative presence.

Condition: Good antique condition with surface wear, patination and casting irregularities consistent with age. There is an old repair/reinforcement to one leg at its junction with the body. Interior and underside show expected wear and oxidation. Please examine the photographs carefully as they form part of the condition report.

Height: approximately 30cm

Material: Bronze / copper alloy

Origin: China

Period: Qing dynasty, probably 18th–19th century

Style: Archaistic, after ancient Chinese ritual bronze prototypes

An impressive large-format Chinese archaistic bronze with considerable sculptural and decorative appeal.

This Chinese archaistic bronze ding tripod censer dates from the Qing dynasty period. The vessel is cast from dark bronze with a dark patinated surface, featuring a rounded body raised on three tall columnar legs and surmounted by a pair of upright loop handles. A broad decorative register encircles the body, displaying stylised taotie mask carvings set against a dense thunder-pattern background, alongside visible surface wear, casting irregularities, and an old repair at the junction of one leg. The piece measures 30 cm high. Placed on a sideboard top in a gentleman's library, the censer adds a scholarly focal point to the room. The dark bronze tone harmonises with traditional wood furnishings and leather accents while the sculptural tripod shape anchors the display surface.

A ding censer is a vessel derived from ancient Chinese ritual cauldrons, typically constructed with a rounded body, tripod legs, and two vertical handles.

These censers are cast from bronze using lost-wax or piece-mould casting techniques, followed by hand-chasing to refine geometric relief patterns and surface patination.

Identification relies on examining cast marks, analyzing the weight and metal composition, evaluating natural wear on the base, and observing the precision of archaic mask motifs.

A bronze censer functions as a sculptural centerpiece on a sideboard, mantelpiece, or within open shelving among books and ceramics.

Dust the item regularly with a soft lint-free cloth and avoid using moisture or chemical polishes that could alter the patination.
