Huge Tudor-Style Oil Portrait Painting After Cornelis van der Voort (1 of 2)

Brief Description:

Note: This is one of a matching pair of paintings we are selling individually. The other depicts Justina Van Teylingen. Please see the final image and our other listings.

This is a magnificent, exceptionally large mid-20th-century Oil on Canvas Portrait Painting, believed to be after the celebrated Dutch portrait artist Cornelis van der Voort (1576–1624).

The impressive full-length portrait depicts a distinguished Elizabethan/Jacobean-era gentleman standing upon a chequered stone floor, dressed in an elaborate dark green-black embroidered doublet, fashionable breeches, fine lace cuffs and a magnificent white pleated ruff collar.

The gentleman holds a pair of gloves in one hand, whilst a finely detailed heraldic coat of arms appears in the upper right corner.

The painting beautifully captures the grandeur and aristocratic elegance of early 17th-century European portraiture, with particularly attractive attention to the sitter's facial features, intricate costume and delicate lacework.

This oil on canvas portrait painting from the mid-20th century follows a Tudor style, depicting a standing gentleman in a dark green-black embroidered doublet, white pleated ruff collar, and lace cuffs, holding gloves above a checkerboard floor with a heraldic coat of arms in the corner. The artwork is set inside a black moulded frame with gilt inner detailing, displaying light surface marks and age-related wear. The framed piece measures 171.9 cm high, 90.6 cm wide, and 6.8 cm deep. Suitable for a grand hallway, period residence, library, or traditional interior, the painting hangs securely above a sideboard or on any substantial wall in a home. The oil medium, black and gold frame, and traditional subject matter create an imposing focal point for rooms designed with classic or historical decor.

Portraits from the 16th and 17th centuries typically featured formal poses, stiff high-collared attire such as ruffs, and detailed heraldic emblems like coats of arms. These compositions highlighted status, wealth, and lineage through elaborate garment rendering and muted, dark background tones.

Artists painted using oil pigments blended with natural drying oils on stretched linen canvas or solid timber panels. Framing traditionally comprised carved timber moulding, often finished with black ebonisation or leaf gilding.

Authentic period works show age-consistent canvas stretching marks, craquelure pattern formation across the paint film, and natural oxidisation on the timber frame and backing board. Prior restorations, re-lining of the canvas, or signatures can also assist with chronological assessment.

Large full-length portraits provide contrast when positioned alongside minimalist contemporary furnishings or minimalist panelling. Placing a dark historic canvas in a hall, library, or dining room creates architectural depth and a classic anchor for the room.

Dust the surface lightly with a dry, ultra-soft natural brush without applying liquid cleaners or moisture. Keep the artwork away from direct sunlight, radiators, and areas with severe relative humidity fluctuations to prevent cracking or warping.
