Tall Graduated Chest of Drawers in Walnut, C1850

19th century
Description

TALL GRADUATED CHEST OF DRAWERS IN WALNUT, C1850

A tall, one piece graduated chest of drawers in solid walnut, with pine and walnut drawer linings. The pine drawer sides are dovetailed and mitred - a feature I have not seen before, but speaks to the quality of the piece which is incredibly heavy (and solid).

Above the middle top drawer there is an interior ‘secret shelf’. The whole is raised on stylish, swept bracket feet and this feature and the ‘one piece’ construction suggest an Irish (or possibly even American) heritage. Original back plate handles, mid 19th century.

Restoration: small repair to front of right hand bracket foot and the whole cleaned and polished.

Date of Manufacture

The Real Wood Furniture Company has dated this Antique Walnut Tallboy Chest to the 1850s.

This Victorian tall chest of drawers dates to around 1850 and is constructed in solid walnut with a warm brown timber colour, incorporating pine and walnut drawer linings. The one-piece furniture piece stands 171 cm high, 110 cm wide, and 61 cm deep, providing substantial storage capacity across six graduated drawer fronts arranged in rows of three smaller upper drawers over five wider horizontal drawers below. Details include a carved fretwork frieze running horizontally along the top moulding, original brass backplate handles with matching keyhole escutcheons, and swept bracket feet supporting the base. There is a small repair to the front of the right-hand bracket foot. In a contemporary home, this imposing item sits comfortably in a bedroom, dressing room, or hallway to store clothing, linens, or accessories. Its substantial vertical presence makes it suitable for placement against a large wall in traditional interiors, English country house settings, or transitional spaces, offering generous practical drawer capacity while maintaining a classic mid-19th-century silhouette.

A tallboy is a tall, narrow chest of drawers designed to maximise vertical storage while retaining a compact footprint. Originating in the 18th century and refined during the Victorian era, these pieces often feature graduated drawers that increase in depth toward the base.

Mid-19th-century chests were typically constructed using solid walnut or rich walnut veneers over secondary timbers such as pine or oak. Drawer linings were usually made of pine or oak, fitted with hand-cast brass handles and steel lock mechanisms.

Authentic mid-Victorian pieces display hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer linings, original locks, and natural signs of timber shrinkage inside the frame. The presence of carved details, fretwork friezes, and aged brass hardware with authentic oxidisation also indicates period manufacture.

A mid-19th-century walnut chest functions as an anchor piece when set against modern neutral walls. Balancing the warm timber tones with contemporary artwork, simple ceramic vessels, or structural table lamps creates a curated, layered aesthetic.

Regularly dust the wood using a soft, dry lint-free cloth, and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to maintain the timber finish. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and radiators to prevent shrinking, cracking, or veneer lift.
