This Victorian commode chest of drawers dates from 1860 in the French Chateau style, constructed from burr walnut with a grey marble top. The piece measures 91.5 cm high, 127 cm wide, and 57 cm deep. It has a warm brown pale colour palette across its highly figured burr walnut veneers, which are arranged in a symmetrical pattern on the drawer fronts and plinth base. The top surface consists of a grey marble slab with canted front corners and a moulded edge. Below this sits a shallow top drawer featuring applied mouldings that form a central diamond inlay escutcheon around the keyhole. Three deeper drawers are positioned underneath, set within a moulded surround. The cabinet also incorporates solid walnut sides and oak drawer linings, standing on a matching plinth base. Keys are supplied for all four drawers, which display simple brass keyhole escutcheon inserts. This practical storage unit suits placement in a bedroom, dressing room, or hallway as a decorative chest of drawers for clothing, linens, or general items. The flat marble surface provides a functional tabletop space for lamps, ornaments, or everyday accessories. Its classic nineteenth-century proportions and neutral timber tones allow it to integrate into both traditional period interiors and more contemporary living spaces where classic wood finishes are desired.

FAQs

A marble-top commode is a low, wide chest of drawers originating in 18th-century France, designed to provide substantial storage with a durable stone upper surface. During the 19th century, these pieces became popular across Europe, frequently incorporating decorative wood veneers and heavy marble tops.

Mid-19th-century commodes typically feature a solid timber frame faced with highly figured burr walnut veneers. The tops are fitted with carved slabs of marble, such as Saint Anne grey or Carrara marble, and the drawer construction utilizes hand-cut dovetail joints.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-sawn secondary timbers inside drawer boxes, original brass keyhole escutcheons or locks, and natural oxidation on the unexposed wood. The marble top should show subtle wear patterns on the edges and match the exact dimensions of the cabinet plinth.

A marble-top commode functions effectively as a focal piece in an entryway, dining room, or bedroom. The combination of warm timber and cool stone provides textural balance when juxtaposed against contemporary art or minimalist wall finishes.

The timber veneer requires periodic application of natural beeswax to preserve humidity and prevent cracking, avoiding harsh chemical sprays. The marble slab should be cleaned with pH-neutral stone cleaners and wiped dry immediately to prevent staining or etching from liquids.
