This double bed is an example of Victorian bedroom furniture from 1890, created in a Victorian and Gothic style. The frame uses cast iron, wrought iron, and brass materials, with a dark grey finish on the metal elements alongside polished brass top rails and round brass finials at the corners. Detailed circular castings appear at the joins of the vertical spindles, while curved brass rails run along the top of both the headboard and the footboard. The frame measures 143 cm high, 137 cm wide, and 205 cm deep, accepting a standard double base and mattress. In a contemporary home, this bed serves as a central sleeping piece in a bedroom, paired with a firm or sprung base and matching bedding. The construction combines robust metal uprights with decorative metal joins and slender spindles, providing a sturdy framework for daily rest. Placed against a wall in a sleeping chamber, the structure accommodates standard bedroom layouts while offering traditional metalwork details.

Popularised in the mid-to-late 19th century, Victorian bedsteads feature iron framing joined with cast decorative rosettes and topped with brass rails or brass finials. They emerged as a hygienic alternative to wooden beds during the Industrial Revolution.

These bed frames are typically constructed using wrought iron or cast iron for the main structure, with poured cast-iron joints and solid brass tubing or finials along the upper rails.

Authentic Victorian metal beds feature cast-iron corner joints with dovetail lugs, heavy frame weight, hand-finished brass components, and original castors on the footings.

Balance the industrial structure of an iron bedstead with soft, layered textiles such as linen bedding, quilted throws, and neutral cushions to create contrast against the dark metal frame.

Keep the iron frame clean and dry using a soft brush or microfibre cloth to prevent rust formation, and gently polish brass elements with a specialised non-abrasive metal cleaner.
