This Victorian double bed is made from brass and cast iron in a warm gold colour. The design includes spherical ball finials on the corner posts, turned vertical spindles, turned collars, and castors on the feet. The headboard and footboard comprise turned brass spindles with decorative collars between substantial turned corner posts, which feature bold ring turned mouldings, a decorative cross rail, and turned finials. The original iron frame holds a woven wire sprung base. The bed measures 138 cm wide, 207 cm deep, and 161 cm high overall, with a mattress space of 136 cm by 188 cm, and it separates into the headboard, footboard, and sprung base. Suitable for placement in a bedroom or guest room today, it offers a functional sleeping space while retaining its period character.

Victorian brass bedsteads became prominent in the mid-to-late 19th century, valued for their durability and hygienic properties compared to wooden frames. They typically feature tubular brass framing, vertical spindles, decorative cast fittings, and ornamental ball finials.

These beds were constructed using hollow brass tubing or iron cores wrapped in brass sheet, assembled with cast corner joints and drop-in iron side rails. The vertical spindles and horizontal rails are secured using cast or turned brass collars.

Authentic period pieces feature heavy cast iron corner joints with dovetail drop-in rail mechanisms, genuine turned brass fittings, and signs of age-related oxidisation. Original beds often show subtle hand-finished details rather than uniform modern machine moulding.

A brass bed frame creates a geometric focal point when paired with crisp white or neutral linen bedding. The metallic frame complements traditional period decor as well as contemporary scheme contrast against dark painted walls.

Dust the frame regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth. If the brass retains an original lacquer coating, avoid abrasive chemical polishes which strip the protective layer, opting instead for gentle wiping with damp cloth and dry buffing.
