This original Victorian watercolour painting by Scottish artist David Law (1831–1901) is executed on paper using watercolour pigment in earth tones, featuring soft washes under a cloudy sky. The composition depicts a tranquil river landscape with a detailed river reflection bordered by autumnal trees, rolling hills, and a lone slender tree trunk standing near the water's edge, presented mounted and unframed. The artwork measures 28 cm high, 44 cm wide, and 0.2 cm deep. Positioned in an English Country House interior, this piece suits placement above the mantel in a living room, study, or hallway. The fair condition exhibits surface wear appropriate for its age, showcasing historical character through muted browns, greens, and greys within the watercolour pigment, alongside the visible artist signature.

FAQs

Victorian Scottish landscape watercolours are defined by their focus on natural light, atmospheric conditions, and topographical realism, reflecting the 19th-century interest in the British rural landscape.

Artists used water-soluble pigments bound with gum arabic applied to heavy cotton rag paper, relying on layered washes and precise brushwork to achieve tonal depth.

Authentic period watercolours feature hand-applied pigment washes visible under magnification, characteristic period signatures, natural paper tonal aging, and an absence of modern print dots.

A traditional watercolour can be styled by pairing it with a contemporary mount and frame, integrating it into a gallery wall, or placing it as a focal artwork above a mantelpiece or sideboard.

Preserve watercolour art by framing it with UV-filtering conservation glass and acid-free mounting boards, and keep the piece away from direct sunlight and areas of high humidity.
