FAQs

Georgian portrait miniatures produced in pastel are small-scale works on paper, vellum, or card created during the 18th and early 19th centuries. They are characterised by soft colour blending, detailed facial expression, and presentation within protective glazed frames or mounts.

Artists used finely ground mineral pigments mixed with binders to form pastel sticks, which were applied to textured paper or vellum backing. These delicate works were protected beneath glass within timber, brass, or giltwood frames, frequently featuring ebonised or verre eglomise mounts.

Authentic pieces exhibit Period-appropriate hairstyles, cravats, and dress fashions, along with natural hand-drawn textures and historic glass distortion. The backing paper, frame construction, and oxidation on gilt or brass fittings offer further indication of age.

Small antique portraits work well when integrated into eclectic gallery walls alongside contemporary line drawings or prints. Alternatively, positioning a framed miniature in a bookshelf display or a narrow wall space creates a focused point of historical interest.

Pastel works must remain framed under glass with a spacer to prevent the surface from touching the glazing. Display the item away from direct sunlight and humid environments to protect the fragile dry pigment from fading or moisture damage.
