An antique Persian salt bag is a small, handwoven utilitarian container traditionally produced by nomadic and village tribes in Persia to store and transport coarse rock salt for livestock and domestic use.

These pieces are typically constructed using handspun wool for both the pile and foundation, often featuring flatwoven sumakh or pile techniques dyed with natural materials such as madder root and indigo.

Authenticity is identified through the presence of handspun wool with natural irregularities, vegetable-based dyes exhibiting abrash, characteristic tribal iconography, and sturdy utilitarian construction methods.

Such textiles are frequently mounted behind glass in shadow boxes, displayed on tabletops as textural accents, or hung directly on walls as miniature tapestry artworks to introduce history and rich colour.

Preservation requires keeping the textile out of direct sunlight to prevent dye fading, avoiding excessive moisture, and periodically vacuuming gently through a mesh screen on a low setting.
