This original watercolour painting on paper depicts a Yorkshire farmyard scene near Ripley, created by artist Tom Whitehead during the early to mid twentieth century. Rendered in an early twentieth-century realism style, the work portrays traditional stone farm buildings, overhanging tree foliage, and a human figure walking outdoors with a dog. The composition utilises a warm green palette, capturing an English country house design vibe with earthy tones across the architectural surfaces and surrounding landscape. The piece measures 29 cm high, 38 cm wide, and 0.2 cm deep, sold loose on paper or card without a frame. It bears a signature by the artist in the lower corner and carries the verso title Old Farm Buildings near Ripley, exhibiting fair to good condition appropriate for its age. This artwork suits display in a home today positioned above a sideboard or within a traditional living space, bringing historic pastoral charm to interior settings.

FAQs

This period saw artists capturing pastoral subjects with fluid brushwork and atmospheric natural light, documenting regional architecture and rural lifestyles prior to extensive industrialisation.

Artists typically used water-soluble pigments suspended in gum arabic, applied directly onto heavyweight rag paper or paperboard.

Authentic works often feature hand signatures, natural paper toning, muted earth-toned pigments, and distinct layering of washes characteristic of the era.

Hang the artwork individually as a focal point above a timber sideboard, or integrate it alongside complementary period works in a gallery wall setting.

Keep the artwork away from direct sunlight and high humidity, framing it behind UV-protective glass with acid-free mounting materials to prevent fading and discolouration.
