108 X 288cm Antique Seychour Long Rug, the Caucasus

19th century
Description

From the golden age of Caucasian rug weaving, circa 1850-1875 comes this beautifully coloured long rug with a very unusual green background. It's one of the best colours to find in any rug and, this lovely green, but very few rugs were made with it. The story goes that it is disrespectful to walk on Islamic green but I think the more likely explanation is that it is a very hard colour to make that is light fast. Most greens tend to fade as the yellow dye mixed with indigo loses its strength over time revealing the blue. So here is a triumph of dying with a rainbow of other colours including a fabulous gold border.

Non-original sides and scattered small repairs throughout.

3'6" x 9'5"

Date of Manufacture

James Cohen Antique Carpets has dated this Antique Caucasian Seychour Runner to the 1870s.

Originating from the Caucasus around 1870, this antique Seychour runner rug displays a hand-knotted wool pile. The piece exhibits a vibrant green central field decorated with repeating geometric floral motifs, surrounded by multi-tiered multi-coloured borders containing detailed patterns such as a running dog border motif. The outer edges show non-original sides alongside scattered small repairs throughout the fabric, reflecting its age and history. The colour palette includes shades of green, red, pink, blue, and gold across the various decorative bands. Measuring 288 cm high and 108 cm wide, this long runner fits well within an English Country House interior aesthetic. It can be positioned along a spacious hallway, a long gallery space, or a wide landing to add warmth and pattern to a wooden floor. The dense wool construction provides a practical textile surface underfoot while introducing traditional Caucasian design elements to the interior space.

Seychour rugs originate from the north-eastern Caucasus region and are characterised by intricate geometric floral motifs, prominent borders, and dense hand-knotted pile construction.

These textiles are crafted using hand-spun wool pile woven onto a wool or cotton foundation, coloured with natural plant dyes.

Authentic examples display hand-knotted wool foundations, geometric blossom or cross motifs, traditional running-dog border designs, and natural colour variation known as abrash.

A long runner carpet functions as a focal point in hallways, entryways, or along open-plan walkways to introduce pattern and historic texture to modern flooring.

Suction vacuuming without a rotating brush bar is recommended, alongside periodic rotation for even wear and professional specialist cleaning for natural wool fibres.
