Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Georgian antique writing desk is formed in warm brown mahogany with contrasting boxwood stringing. The rectangular top sits above three drawers fitted with circular brass knob handles, complemented by an arched kneehole apron and square tapered legs. The timber displays visible grain variation across the surfaces, alongside age-related wear, restoration marks, and subtle edge definition. Measuring 79 cm high, 97 cm wide, and 50 cm deep, the compact footprint provides practical clearance and surface area for daily tasks. The piece suits study rooms, home offices, or bedrooms as a functional writing desk or dressing table within traditional interior schemes.

FAQs

Georgian writing desks are defined by symmetrical proportions, classic restrained elegance, and high-quality woodwork. Originating in the eighteenth century, they frequently feature mahogany construction, fine boxwood stringing, brass drawer hardware, and square tapered legs.

Primary timbers included dense West Indian and Cuban mahogany, known for deep colour and grain. Secondary woods like pine or oak were used for drawer linings, while decorative elements featured satinwood or boxwood stringing and cast brass hardware.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints, irregular hand-sawn timber marks on hidden surfaces, and natural age-related shrinkage. Original brass handles often leave distinct cast impression marks or oxidisation rings on the drawer fronts.

A Georgian desk works well as a dedicated work-from-home station, a hallway console table, or a bedroom vanity desk. Pairing rich mahogany with modern art, modern lighting, or minimalist seating creates a balanced scheme.

Dust regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year following the wood grain. Keep the furniture away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber warping and finish fading.
