Description

Large Bronzed Sculpture Statue of Rembrandt Van Rijn Baroque Spelter (2 of 2)

Brief Description:

This is a truly incredible, large, and heavy Bronzed Spelter Sculpture depicting the Flemish Baroque artist Rembrandt Van Rijn (1606-1669).

Note: We have one other sculpture that was made by the same 19th-century company depicting artist Peter Paul Rubens - please see our other listings.

The above impressive piece weighs 4.1 kg, and it is of a beautiful patina.

It dates to the 19th-century Victorian period.

The sculpture portrays Rembrandt standing upon a circular wooden base in deep thought whilst holding a large book in one arm.

He is dressed in the typical Baroque clothing of the era, with an elegant cloak and posh shoes.

To all intents and purposes, the piece has the appearance of a very expensive bronze.

It is a beautiful sculpture that displays well wherever it is placed.

FAQs

Spelter is a zinc-based alloy commonly used in the 19th and early 20th centuries as a cost-effective alternative to bronze. It is typically cast and finished with patination to mimic the appearance of bronze or other precious metals.

Manufacturers typically applied a chemical patina, bronze paint, or electroplating to spelter castings to create a metallic surface finish resembling bronze, brass, or copper.

Spelter is significantly lighter than bronze, softer to the touch, and often shows a greyish-white metal beneath scratches in the finish. Additionally, a magnet will not stick to either material, but filing an inconspicuous area will reveal the underlying zinc alloy.

Such decorative objects work well placed on bookshelves, desks, or mantelpieces where their metallic finish and historical subject matter add textural contrast and character to modern decor.

Dust the surface gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth. Avoid using water, abrasive cleaners, or chemical solvents, as these can strip the applied patination and damage the underlying metal.
