Painted Pine Kitchen Dresser C.1890

19th century
Description

Late 19th.c. painted pine kitchen dresser or sideboard retaining the original 'scumbled' paintwork c.1890. Raised back with a shallow shelf with serpentine shaped edge and four small drawers. Over the superb 2" thick worktop (height 34") in solid sycamore. Base with seven large drawers of graduated height arranged around the slightly recessed central cupboard fitted with a single shelf inside. Beautiful scumbled paintwork designed to give the impression of more expensive burr walnut and oak veneers. It is quite rare to find these sideboards with their original paint as the vast majority have been stripped back to the bare pine. With half depth turned finial mouldings applied either side of the drawers and a cupid's bow shaped apron above the cupboard. Raised on the original tall turned feet front and rear. Some wear to the paintwork, otherwise excellent colour and condition, cleaned and waxed in our workshops.

Note the top is removable for delivery.

This late Victorian painted pine kitchen dresser dates from 1890 and is executed in a rustic farmhouse style. The piece measures 137 cm high, 185.5 cm wide and 56 cm deep, featuring a reddish brown scumbled finish designed to simulate burr walnut and oak veneers. Notable elements include a raised scalloped gallery back with a shallow shelf and four small trinket drawers, a thick solid sycamore worktop, and a base comprising seven graduated drawers arranged around a central cupboard. Further detailing encompasses turned wooden knobs, half depth turned finial mouldings flanking the drawers, a cupid's bow apron, and tall turned feet, alongside visible wear to the paintwork. In a modern interior, this sideboard functions well in a kitchen or dining room for tableware storage and display. The working surface provides practical utility for food preparation or serving, while the lower drawers and cupboard accommodate kitchen linens, cutlery or dry goods. The upper trinket drawers and shelf offer convenient placement for everyday items or decorative objects. Maintenance involves routine dusting and occasional waxing to preserve the waxed timber surfaces.

A Victorian kitchen dresser is a utilitarian storage piece featuring a combination of drawers, cupboards, and often a galleried top or upper shelf, popularised in 19th-century British homes.

These pieces were commonly crafted from native softwoods such as pine, often finished with scumbling, stain, or paint to simulate more expensive figure woods.

Authentic examples feature hand-cut dovetail joints, turned wooden handles, natural age-related timber shrinkage, and original backboards fastened with early machine or hand-forged nails.

A painted pine dresser functions effectively in a contemporary dining room, hallway, or kitchen, serving as a focal storage piece topped with ceramics, table linens, or framed artwork.

Clean the surface gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoid harsh liquid solvents, and apply a light coating of clear beeswax paste periodically to safeguard the timber finish.
