Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

The Louis XVI style emerged in France during the late 18th century as a reaction to the excessive curves of Rococo. It is characterised by a return to classical symmetry, straight lines, fluted pilasters, and geometric restraint inspired by archaeological discoveries at Pompeii.

Authentic period commodes typically feature solid oak or pine carcasses veneered in exotic or domestic hardwoods, topped with slabs of quarried marble such as Carrara or Griotte. Joinery relied on traditional hand-cut dovetails for the drawer construction.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the secondary woods, hand-cut dovetails, tool marks on the marble underside, and the cast quality of the gilt-bronze or brass mounts. Period pieces exhibit construction methods consistent with 18th-century cabinet making rather than modern machinery.

A classical commode functions effectively as a statement piece in contemporary spaces, providing a juxtaposition of eras when paired with minimalist art or modern lighting. It works well as a practical storage solution in a hallway, bedroom, or living area.

Maintain the painted finish with a dry microfibre cloth and avoid harsh chemical cleaners. The marble top should be sealed periodically to prevent staining from liquids, and acidic substances like citrus or wine must be wiped away immediately.
