Description

Although best known for his individual silhouettes of people, Augustin Edouart also cut family conversation pieces that often included the family dog. He kept scrapbooks in which he pasted his practice and experimental cuttings. These scrapbooks and his archive of work were mostly all lost to the sea when Edouart was shipwrecked off the coast of Guernsey in 1829. Some years ago a salvaged scrapbook came to light in a Parisian bookshop and this is the source of this unique cutting of a dog pleading for another biscuit.

The silhouette is presented in a period daguerreotype frame and has a stamp of authenticity within. The frame shows some light wear but is perfectly stable and ready to hang.

Framed Size: 98 x 86mm

Provenance: The Artist's Scrapbook

Date of Manufacture

Wigs on the Green has dated this Antique Paper Silhouette to the 19th Century.

FAQs

Paper silhouettes gained immense popularity in the 18th and 19th centuries as an accessible form of portraiture before the advent of photography, often hand-cut freehand from black paper.

Authentic period pieces typically feature hand-cut black paper mounted on plain or tinted card stock, frequently housed in miniature wooden frames with embossed brass mats and protective glass.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the paper stock for age-related oxidation, inspecting the cut edges under magnification for hand-scissor precision rather than modern laser cutting, and checking the framing construction.

These compact historical pieces integrate well into gallery walls alongside contemporary art, or styled individually on narrow wall spaces and mantelpieces to add texture and historical narrative.

To prevent fading and deterioration, antique paper art should be kept away from direct sunlight, maintained in stable humidity conditions, and framed using conservation-grade archival materials.
