Akstafa rugs originate from the Shirvan region in the eastern Caucasus, traditionally characterised by stylised bird motifs, geometric symbols, and distinct prayer mihrab designs woven by nomadic and village weavers.

These textiles feature hand-spun wool piles knotted onto wool or cotton foundations, utilising natural vegetable and insect dyes for colours such as madder red, indigo blue, and ivory.

Authentication involves examining the density of the hand-knotting, the irregularities characteristic of tribal work, the patina of the wool, and the composition of natural dye palettes on the reverse side.

An antique rug can be used to ground minimalist modern furniture, hung as a textile wall art piece, or layered over neutral flooring to add texture, history, and rich colour to a room.

Preservation requires low-suction vacuuming without a rotating brush, keeping the textile out of direct sunlight to prevent fading, and using professional specialist cleaning when necessary.
