19th century
Sold 27 November 2025 · Siez Gallery
This “Antique Caucasian Kazak Rug” found a buyer.

It was listed by Siez Gallery. Sold pieces stay on Sellingantiques as a record of what has passed through, and the next one is rarely far away.

Description

This well-drawn rug most likely belongs to the Kazak sub-group. It is abundant with textural tribal imagery, from the enclosing latched-hook motifs along the border to the sturdy formation of jagged diamonds in the centre. Whilst it is also interesting to note the depictions of small animals and human figures, the most impressive feature has to be the atmospheric teal-blue of the main field, that is effectively sectioned off by the beige frame. Overall, this piece embodies the best qualities of traditional caucasian craftsmanship.

Kazak rugs are handknotted floor coverings traditionally woven by tribal groups in the Caucasus region, renowned for their bold geometric medallions and saturated natural vegetable dyes.

Authentic pieces typically feature handspun sheeps wool for both the pile and the foundation warp and weft threads, often dyed using natural indigo, madder root, and other plant or insect-based colourants.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the knot density, irregularities in the handspun wool, the presence of natural abrash colour variations, and traditional tribal motifs such as large geometric stars and hooked polygons.

These vibrant textiles work effectively as statement floor art in contemporary spaces, grounding minimalist furniture or adding texture and warmth to neutral rooms.

Preservation requires regular gentle vacuuming without a beater bar, professional organic washing when needed, and keeping the textile out of direct, prolonged sunlight to protect the natural dyes.
