An absolutely stunning antique French inlaid marquetry knee hole desk. This was made in France, it dates from around the 1930’s.

It is a lovely petite size, and is of outstanding quality. There is profuse floral inlaid marquetry of various woods on all sides, including the back and top. There are amazing bronze ormolu mounts, and a beautiful brass rim around the top edge. This has a good amount of storage space and is beautifully finished on the back, so can be used as a free standing item.

French marquetry involves the artful application of small pieces of veneer to form decorative patterns, floral motifs, or pictorial scenes on a wooden carcase, heavily utilized during the 18th and 19th centuries.

These pieces typically feature a solid timber frame, such as oak or beech, veneered in exotic woods like kingwood, walnut, or mahogany, and embellished with hand-cut marquetry and cast brass or gilt-bronze mounts.

Authentic pieces show signs of age in the hand-cut nature of the veneer work, natural oxidisation of the timber, hand-cut dovetail joints within the drawer construction, and traditional cast metal mounts rather than modern reproductions.

Pairing an ornate historical desk with contemporary minimalist seating or placing it against a neutral wall allows the intricate floral wood inlay and brass details to stand out as a central focal point.

Keep the wood away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent the veneer from drying and lifting, and maintain a stable indoor humidity while occasionally applying traditional beeswax to nourish the finish.
