The George II furniture style, spanning from 1727 to 1760, is characterised by a transition from heavy walnut designs to the widespread adoption of rich mahogany, incorporating refined carving, classical motifs, and an increasing appreciation for oriental lacquerwork.

Cabinetmakers during the Georgian period primarily utilised solid mahogany, oak for drawer linings and secondary framing, and occasionally pine, often finished with japanning, hand-painted decoration, or intricate brass hardware.

Authentic pieces exhibit period construction techniques such as hand-cut dovetails on drawer boxes, hand-planed secondary timbers, original or period-matching brass drop handles, and natural wear patterns consistent with age.

This type of statement furniture works well as a focal point in a contemporary room, paired with minimalist surroundings to let the intricate hand-painted details and historical character stand out without visual clutter.

Preserve antique painted and lacquered surfaces by keeping them out of direct sunlight, maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, and dusting gently with a dry, soft cloth without applying modern chemical polishes.
