FAQs

Ebonised furniture features timber stained or painted to closely imitate expensive ebony, a technique that gained significant popularity during the Victorian era to create dramatic, high-contrast pieces.

These desks were typically constructed from sturdy hardwoods such as mahogany or oak as a carcase, finished with a dense black stain or paint, and complemented by brass handles and escutcheons.

Authenticity is determined by examining hand-cut dovetail joints in the drawer construction, the presence of original brass hardware, timber shrinkage consistent with age, and maker stamps where applicable.

An ebonised desk serves as a striking focal point in a study or home office, pairing well with neutral walls, rich leather seating, and minimalist lighting to balance its dark visual weight.

Preservation requires keeping the item away from direct sunlight and heat sources, dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth, and occasionally applying appropriate microcrystalline wax to protect the finish.
