Karabagh Rug

1900 - 1920
Description

This is typical of a type of Karabagh produced for the European market. They are often bright, almost garish and sometimes deploy western design elements. I think this rug has a good balance of east and west with stylized boteh nestling in the diamonds over a formal striped field. I love rugs with depth and this is a great example.

The diamond medallions run down the centre while half diamonds float under the main border giving an impression of an infinite field. Even more impressive is the way the striped field flows under these diamonds, this is accentuated by the diamonds obscuring part of the stripe. Altogether a great and interesting piece with a strong presence.

Good condition with some well executed repairs in places. I believe the selvedges have been restored too. A very tidy piece which is ready to use.

Date of Manufacture

Phil Bell Antique Rugs has dated this Antique Karabagh Runner Rug to the 1900s.

This antique Karabagh hallway runner is a hand-knotted wool rug from 1900, produced in a Caucasian style for the European market. It displays a red, blue, and yellow palette with a striped field, central diamond medallions, and geometric borders. Additional visible details include fringe ends, alternating floral guard stripes, and blue outer borders. There are well executed repairs in places and restored selvedges showing signs of age and maintenance. The rug measures 281 cm high by 108 cm wide in practical terms. In a home today, this piece works effectively as a floor covering in a long hallway, a narrow gallery space, or alongside a bed in a bedroom. The heavy wool pile provides warmth and texture underfoot while the strong linear pattern draws the eye down the length of the room. It suits traditional interiors, country houses, and eclectic spaces looking for an authentic antique textile with vibrant coloration.

Karabagh rugs originate from the Southern Caucasus region, known historically for producing hand-woven textiles with bold geometric compositions and vibrant colour palettes influenced by Persian and regional tribal weaving traditions.

These textiles are typically hand-knotted using locally sourced hand-spun sheep wool for both the pile and the underlying warp and weft foundation, coloured with natural plant and mineral dyes.

Authenticity is indicated by hand-knotted construction visible on the reverse side, slight natural colour variations known as abrash, and traditional motifs such as repeated central diamond medallions surrounded by multi-band borders.

A geometric runner functions well in elongated architectural spaces such as entrance halls, corridors, or kitchen gallies, introducing linear structure, texture, and saturated accent colour to modern or traditional flooring.

Regular care involves gentle vacuuming without a rotating brush, placing a dense rug underlay beneath to prevent slippage and fibre wear, and addressing spills immediately with spot cleaning using pH-neutral wool detergents.
