During the Victorian era, indoor plant cultivation became exceptionally popular due to advancements in glasshouse technology and a cultural fascination with botany. Brass planters and jardinieres were manufactured extensively to house ferns, palms, and flowering plants in domestic parlours and conservatories.

These pieces were typically constructed from sheet brass, often utilising techniques such as spinning, hammering, or pressing to form the body. Many featured cast brass components, including paw feet, lion mask ring handles, and decorative rims, which were soldered or riveted to the main vessel.

Authentic period pieces often display signs of age, including natural tarnish, minor surface wear, and hand-finished details. Examination of the construction reveals traditional joining methods, such as hand-cut rivets or early brazing, rather than modern machine welding.

A brass planter adds warmth and metallic contrast to contemporary or traditional schemes. It can be styled on a side table, mantelpiece, or bookshelf, holding trailing foliage or ferns to introduce organic texture and a collected aesthetic.

To preserve antique brass, dust gently with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid abrasive polishes that can strip the natural oxidisation and patina, and ensure any internal planting uses a protective liner to prevent moisture damage from standing water.
