Description

A stunning large 19th century marine oil painting by French artist, Henri Cassinelli, circa 1870.

Henri Cassinelli (1833-1927) was the son of an art dealer in Le Havre. Henri started by painting harbour scenes in his home town, and soon also painted land and seascapes in nearly Honfleur. He studied with Jean-Baptiste Durand Brager in Paris and also became close to Eugène Boudin whose paintings sell for hundreds of thousands of pounds... Boudin and Cassinelli often worked together on the Normandy coast, and even collaborated and co signed a number of paintings. One of them is in the Bowes Museum in Barnard Castle, another in the Boudin museum in Honfleur.

This large and very well executed and atmospheric scene of a fishing vessel in stormy seas has elements and clear inspiration from a Boudin painting. Signed lower right by Cassinelli.

Overall size including frame: 41 x 32 inches

This superb painting has been professionally cleaned, conserved and original frame restored to the highest of standards.

William Rand Antiques has dated this Marine Oil Painting to the 19th Century.

Maritime painting focuses primarily on ships, seascapes, and naval history, gaining significant prominence during the seventeenth century in the Netherlands and evolving through the nineteenth century across Europe with a focus on realism and dramatic atmospheric conditions.

Traditional oil paintings are typically executed using linseed oil-based pigments applied to stretched linen or canvas, housed within hand-carved and gilded wooden frames finished with composition ornamentation.

Authenticity is evaluated through examination of canvas weave, craquelure patterns in the paint layer, stretcher bar construction, artist signatures, and provenance documentation verified by specialist inspection under ultraviolet light.

A large-scale maritime work serves as a commanding focal point, functioning effectively when hung against dark neutral walls in a traditional living space or contrasted with minimalist architecture to highlight historical texture.

Preservation requires maintaining stable room temperatures and relative humidity, avoiding direct sunlight exposure to prevent pigment degradation, and keeping the canvas back protected from dust and moisture.
