James Fry was an English artist, proficient in watercolour, pastels and oils, though he is best known for his oil on board works. He can be described as a modern British Impressionist in style.

Fry was born in London and studied at Watford School of Art under Arthur Scott. However, he spent most of his adult life in Dorset, where he lived and worked from a studio in the village of Corfe Castle. He became known in the area for travelling around on his bicycle, painting the beautiful coastline, heathland and the sea. In recent years his works have been much sought after and prices for them have increased significantly, representing a sound investment.

This original impasto oil on board is a very good example of the work of James Fry. It is a riot of sunlight and colour, painted in thick bold strokes. It depicts, in impressionist style, a late afternoon view looking from the sea back into Poole harbour, with the Purbeck Hills of Dorset in the background. The sun is low in the sky, filling the air with golden beams of light, which are reflected into the calm sea beneath. The hills appear as black silhouettes against the bright light, with those in the distance glowing gold and pale mauve. The sea is a mix of twinkling blues and aquamarine, with golden yellow reflections. It is a stunning scene which captures a mood, both calm and magnificent.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Mid-Century British impasto landscape art typically features thick, textured oil paint applied with a palette knife or stiff brush, creating tactile surface depth. Artists focused on atmospheric light, muted natural tones, and stylised depictions of countryside and coastal regions.

Artists in the mid-20th century frequently painted using oil pigments applied to stretched canvas, wood, or hardboard panels. Frames were typically crafted from solid wood, painted or stained, and designed with simple geometric profiles to complement the artwork.

Authenticity is evaluated through physical characteristics, including age-appropriate surface craquelure, natural oxidation or yellowing of varnish, and period-correct backing materials. Artist signatures, studio markings, and period framing techniques also assist in attribution.

A mid-century landscape artwork can be positioned above a sideboard, fireplace mantel, or incorporated into a curated gallery wall. Pairing textured oil paintings with natural timber furniture, neutral walls, or contemporary metal accents creates visual contrast.

Impasto oil paintings require gentle dusting with a dry, soft-bristled brush to remove dust from raised paint ridges without dislodging pigment. The artwork should be kept away from direct sunlight, extreme temperature changes, and high humidity to prevent warping or paint cracking.
