Original Midcentury Abstract Oil Painting by William Ernst Burwell, Frsa

1940 - 1960
Description

A stunning midcentury abstract oil on board by the listed artist William Ernst Burwell (1911-1974). Beatifully painted with heavily applied textures. It is in its original gallery frame of painted softwood. We have obtained several of the artists works from his studio. Painting has the artists gallery label to the reverse. Condition of painting is very good. The original frame has bumped corners, some marks and some overpainting where the artist has touched up the edge of the painting, but is generally good.

The painter and stage designer William Ernst Burwell, FRSA was born in Kingston-upon-Hull, Yorkshire. He studied at Hull College of Art and Brighton School of Art and showed at the RA, NEAC and elsewhere in Britain and overseas. From 1940-1946 he served with the Essex Regiment and was subsequently employed at Pinewood Studios. The many film sets of the 1950s, 1960s and early 1970s on which he worked included 'Oliver Twist' and the 'Black Narcissus'. His work is in the permanent collection of the Imperial War Museum. 'Bunny' Burwell was a founder member of The Colne Group and also a member of The Free Painters Group. He lived at Turk's Head Court, Eton.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Mid-Century Abstract Expressionist art emerged in the mid-20th century, characterised by non-representational forms, heavy texture, dynamic brushwork, and an emphasis on spontaneous emotional expression.

Artists frequently applied heavy oil paint, mixed media, sand, or impasto mediums onto board or canvas, often setting the finished work in simple wooden tray frames.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit period-correct board or canvas ageing, original framing hardware, artist signatures or monograms, and natural surface craquelure or patina consistent with mid-20th-century materials.

Position the artwork as a focal point above a sideboard or mantelpiece, pairing its organic textures with minimalist furniture, clean architectural lines, and neutral backdrops.

Keep the painting away from direct sunlight, extreme humidity, and heat sources, dusting gently with a soft dry brush and avoiding chemical cleaners or water.
