Plaster busts gained immense popularity during the neoclassical revival of the 18th and 19th centuries, when artisans cast replicas of ancient Greek and Roman sculptures for academic study and domestic display.

Traditional pieces were typically cast using gypsum plaster poured into multi-part gelatine or mould systems, often reinforced with internal wire or hemp frames, then finished with patination to mimic marble or stone.

Authentic period pieces exhibit natural ageing such as surface micro-cracking, handling wear, yellowing of protective wax layers, and distinct mould seams rather than the uniform perfection of modern resin reproductions.

Positioning the sculpture on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or console table introduces classical form and architectural weight, creating a sophisticated focal point when paired with modern minimalism or maximalist collections.

Plaster is porous and water-soluble; cleaning should be performed strictly with a soft dry brush or a gentle microfibre cloth to remove dust, avoiding all moisture, chemical solvents, and abrasive cleaners.
