Cloisonne is an ancient metalwork technique where enamel is applied to compartments created by soldering flat metal wires to a metal base, with the craft reaching high refinement during the Ming and Qing dynasties.

Authentic pieces typically feature a base of hammered copper or brass, onto which thin metal wires form cellular partitions filled with vitreous enamel paste before firing.

Authentication involves examining the weight of the metal, the presence of pinholes or slight imperfections in the hand-applied enamel, and the characteristic oxidation patterns on the exposed base metal.

These decorative objects work effectively when displayed on open shelving, sideboards, or mantelpieces as focal points that introduce historical texture and vibrant colour to a room.

Preservation requires gentle dusting with a soft, dry cloth, avoiding abrasive cleaning agents, harsh chemicals, and excessive moisture to protect the delicate enamel and metal joints.
