FAQs

An apostle spoon is a spoon featuring a figure of an apostle or saint on the terminal of the handle. Historically, sets of these spoons, often depicting Christ and the twelve apostles, were traditionally given as christening gifts by wealthy sponsors during the Tudor and Stuart periods.

These pieces were typically crafted from silver, silver-gilt, or base metals such as latten, an alloy of copper and zinc resembling brass. Latten was commonly utilised for more utilitarian or less costly domestic items during the medieval and early modern eras.

Authenticity is evaluated through examining the manufacturing technique, such as cast figures joined to hexagonal or round stems, correct metallurgical composition, and appropriate surface wear including period patina and makers marks.

Such historic items are typically displayed within specialised collector cabinets, shadow boxes, or on dedicated display stands to highlight their sculptural form and antiquity without cluttering modern spaces.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity levels and avoiding abrasive cleaning agents, polishes, or harsh chemicals that can strip away the historic patination and damage the soft metal alloy.
