This Victorian brass chestnut roaster, dating from 1860, is an English country house fireplace accessory made from gold-coloured brass. The piece consists of an oval-shaped pan with a hinged lid, featuring intricate pierced decoration and small ventilation holes across the upper surface. A long, slender handle extends from the pan, ornamented with turned sections along its shaft and terminating in a shaped, pierced loop at the end. Measuring 56 cm high, 13 cm wide, and 3.5 cm deep, the item displays a warm metallic finish with natural surface wear and minor patination consistent with age and use. In a modern home, this traditional fireside implement is suited for display on a fireplace hearth, hung by its handle, or placed on a side table to add period character to a living space.

An antique brass chestnut roaster is a long-handled hearth tool equipped with a perforated enclosure designed to roast chestnuts safely over open fires during the 18th and 19th centuries.

These tools were crafted from sheet brass or copper with pierced or punched patterns across the lid to allow heat ventilation, attached to extended iron or brass handles to keep the user away from intense hearth heat.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of manual craftsmanship such as hand-riveted joins, subtle variations in perforation patterns, genuine surface wear around hinges, and natural oxidisation within crevices.

Display the roaster beside an open fireplace, rest it inside a decorative hearth alcove, or suspend it from a chimney breast to introduce metallic texture and historical depth.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and avoid harsh chemical cleaners to preserve the original patina, applying a light application of conservators wax if protection against moisture is required.
