This nineteenth-century French Rococo fireplace accessory functions as a spark screen and measures 76 cm high, 74 cm wide, and 24 cm deep. Constructed from brass and wire mesh with a gold finish, the guard includes a square frame with curved corners, a carrying handle at the top, and four splayed deer's hoof feet. Decorative elements comprise ormolu framing, fine mesh, swirls, shells, floral swags, a ribbon motif, cabriole feet, flaming finials, and a central bagpipe and quiver motif. Positioned on the fireplace hearth in a home today, the guard protects the surrounding area from stray sparks and hearth damage. The metal construction provides durability for regular winter use, while the traditional French Chateau aesthetic complements traditional hearth settings. The piece requires no assembly and stands securely on its decorative legs before an operational fireplace.

FAQs

A French Rococo fire guard is an ornamental protective screen placed before an open hearth, originating in eighteenth-century France and characterised by scrollwork, botanical motifs, and gilded metal decoration.

Traditional fire screens of this style are constructed using cast or chased brass and bronze components, framed around fine wire mesh panels designed to contain embers while conducting heat.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-chased metal detailing, cast brass ribbon or floral motifs, heavy casting marks, and original patination across the structural feet and wire mesh.

A brass fire screen serves as a focal point inside or in front of an inactive fireplace opening, providing architectural interest alongside marble surrounds, tiled hearths, or modern mantelpieces.

Dust the item regularly with a soft dry cloth while avoiding chemical cleaners that may strip aged lacquer or gilding, using a soft brush to clear debris from the wire mesh panel.
