Description

1920s silver Polhem pocket watch and chain.

The watch has a good quality Swiss stem-winding movement which is working nicely. The movement is signed with the name Polhem. The brand name Polhem was registered on at least three occasions by different companies, twice in Sweden and once in Switzerland, but this particular movement ties up to Richard Vogt of Biel in Switzerland who registered the mark in 1928. The movement is protected by an inner cover.

The watch itself measures 50mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is silver and has Continental .800 silver marks. The bezel and hinged case back are in lovely condition, the back having engine turned detail and an owner’s initials EH. The sides have a few marks and a little unevenness.

The acrylic lens is in good condition.

The signed white enamel dial looks good to the naked eye, there is a short faint hairline towards the edge of the dial, between 7 and 8. Original hands.

The watch comes with a single silver chain, 32cm long including the T-bar and the clasp. Each of the links has the lion silver mark. There is also a silver fob with rose gold highlights, hallmarked for 1912. The chain and fob weigh 46g.

The watch and chain come in a new presentation box.

Date of Manufacture

The Vintage Wrist Watch Company has dated this Silver Pocket Watch to the 1920s.

ALL PRICES INCLUDE UK POSTAGE (because of GPSR legislation, we no longer post items less than 100 years old to Europe, including Northern Ireland).

Please contact us regarding international shipping.

All of our watches are checked over before listing, and are also checked for accuracy which is usually within around +/- two to three minutes over 24 hours (unless otherwise stated), which is considered respectable for a vintage watch.

We are a VAT registered company and all purchases are covered by Consumer Regulations.

Credit / debit card purchases up to £300 can be made over the telephone on 01386 750238 or you can proceed via the 'Purchase Antique' button on each listing page. Alternatively, there is a Paypal payment link if you scroll down the page and we also accept bank transfers.

We are an on-line only business and do not have facilities for callers. Our offices are open from Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

With regards to appraisals / valuations, we receive a huge number of information requests each day and unfortunately do not have the manpower to deal with them all individually. Our advice would be to contact a local auctioneer for a full appraisal.

By the 1920s, pocket watches remained popular alongside emerging wristwatches, often featuring reliable mechanical movements and clear enamel dials designed for daily precision.

These timepieces were typically constructed from sterling silver, nickel, or gold-filled cases, housing intricate brass mechanical movements and protected by glass or crystal lenses.

Authentic pieces feature hallmark stamps on the inner case, maker signatures on the dial or movement, and traditional mechanical escapements that require manual winding.

An antique pocket watch and chain can be displayed on a dedicated display stand, within a glass cloche, or styled inside a study on a desk or mantelpiece.

Keep the watch away from moisture and extreme temperature fluctuations, store it securely on a flat surface, and have the mechanical movement periodically serviced by a professional horologist.
