Irish cabinet makers during the 18th and 19th centuries frequently utilised imported West Indian mahogany, known for its rich grain, deep colour, and exceptional durability, creating distinctive regional furniture styles.

Authentic period pieces are constructed from solid mahogany and reliable secondary woods like oak or pine, featuring hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer construction and traditional mortise and tenon joinery.

Authenticity is identified by examining hand-cut dovetailing, period-correct brass drop handles, natural timber shrinkage, hand-planed drawer surfaces, and consistent ageing and patina throughout the structure.

Position the piece as a focal point in a living room or bedroom, pairing it with minimalist contemporary art or modern lighting to create a balanced contrast between old and new design elements.

Keep the wood away from direct sunlight and extreme humidity fluctuations to prevent cracking. Dust regularly with a soft cloth and apply high-quality beeswax periodically to nourish the surface.
