Description

With delicate colours of faded pinks, burnt orange tones and off white natural wool, this is a rare antique Ziegler carpet from the late 19th century.  With an early feel and large scale open design, it could even be a pre-Ziegler production and be earlier around 1870.  Woven in Sultanabad, Persia the home of the famous Ziegler carpets, the weave and pile is that of this workshop.

It is very unusual to see a Ziegler in this colour palette, often woven in muted colours but rarely in sandy biscuit tones, with a very faded pink border and so many dye changes, known as abrash.  This is an ancient and exquisite carpet, condition is good, with lots of pile still showing - some lower areas but nothing too low.  One corner has been repaired many years ago, but blends in well and is not very noticeable.

The history of Ziegler carpets: In 1883, Ziegler and Co, of Manchester, England established a Persian carpet manufacture in Sultanabad Persia, which employed designers from major western department stores such as B. Altman & Co of New York and Liberty, to modify 16th- and 17th-century Eastern designs for the more restrained western taste. Using highly developed dying techniques, and the best artisans from the region, the Ziegler Co created rugs with beautiful, all-over patterns and with softer palettes than their vibrant Persian counterparts.

Ziegler carpets are nineteenth-century Persian rugs produced by the Swiss firm Ziegler & Co., specifically designed with muted colour palettes and large-scale floral patterns to appeal to Western interior tastes.

These carpets are typically hand-knotted using wool pile on a cotton foundation, employing natural vegetable dyes derived from plants, roots, and minerals to achieve their characteristic soft hues.

Authentic pieces feature characteristic open fields with large, stylised palmettes, balanced borders, characteristic abrash colour variations, and fine knot counts consistent with late nineteenth-century Persian production.

Their muted tones and large-scale motifs allow them to anchor contemporary living spaces or traditional drawing rooms, complementing neutral upholstery and understated architectural details.

Preservation requires regular gentle vacuuming without a beater bar, professional washing by a specialist conservator every few years, and protection from direct sunlight to prevent dye fading.
