FAQs

Nineteenth-century North European furniture often combined sturdy construction with regional craftsmanship, featuring clean proportions, robust timbers, and understated decorative elements tailored to domestic utility.

These pieces were typically constructed from solid native hardwoods such as oak, employing traditional joinery methods like dovetailing for drawers and hand-forged or cast brass hardware.

Authenticity is evaluated through hand-cut dovetails, tool marks consistent with period manufacturing, appropriate timber shrinkage, and original hardware or backplates showing natural ageing and oxidisation.

Pairing a historic wooden chest with contemporary artwork or minimalist lighting creates a balanced contrast, grounding the space while highlighting the rich texture and tone of the timber.

Maintain antique oak by keeping it out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources, applying a quality beeswax periodically to nourish the wood, and dusting gently with a dry, soft cloth.
