This 1920 oak chest of drawers embodies English Country style, constructed from solid timber with a warm golden-brown finish and figured grain. The piece comprises three horizontal drawers, each fitted with round wooden knob handles and small keyholes, all set within a rectangular frame with a moulded top and square legs. Measuring 78 cm high, 91 cm wide and 43.5 cm deep, the compact storage unit functions well in a bedroom, hallway or living room for organising clothing or household items. The rustic farmhouse design includes a clean-lined aesthetic with subtle aged patina on the wood surfaces. Placed against a wall or beside furniture, the chest serves as a practical surface for lamps, decorative objects or daily essentials.

FAQs

Chests of drawers from the early 20th century often blend utilitarian practicality with clean, traditional proportions. They frequently feature solid oak construction, simple turned wooden handles, subtle keyhole details, and straightforward panel work inspired by earlier Georgian and Victorian designs.

Furniture from this period commonly utilised solid oak and oak veneers, constructed using traditional dovetail joints on drawer linings. Solid timber drawer bottoms, panelled backs, and mortise and tenon frames were standard practices ensuring structural durability.

Look for signs of age inside the drawers, such as hand-cut or early machine-cut dovetail joints, oxidation on unvarnished wood surfaces, and natural wear around the drawer runners and handles. Authentic pieces also show original keyhole cuts and genuine timber grain variation.

A compact oak chest can serve as a bedside table, hallway side cabinet, or living room accent piece. Pair the warm timber finish with neutral wall palettes, contemporary ceramics, or woven textiles to balance traditional woodwork with modern minimalist decor.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish every few months to nourish the wood and maintain its patina. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and radiators to prevent timber shrinkage or cracking.
