A banjo barometer is a type of weather-glass instrument featuring a curved, bulbous lower dial and a tapered neck resembling the shape of a banjo, which became highly popular in British homes during the 19th century.

These instruments were typically constructed from dense hardwoods such as mahogany or oak, featuring brass bezels, hand-carved wooden crests, and silvered or porcelain dial faces protected by convex glass.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit period-appropriate joinery, hand-engraved brass or paper dials, mercury-filled glass tubes with visible oxidisation, and genuine hand-carved wooden ornamentation rather than modern cast resins.

An antique wall barometer adds rich historical texture when hung singly against a dark-painted hallway wall or incorporated into a curated gallery display featuring other vintage scientific instruments.

Keep the instrument away from direct sunlight and sudden temperature fluctuations to protect the wood finish and internal mechanisms, dusting the casing gently with a dry, soft cloth.
