This Victorian banjo barometer combines a thermometer and aneroid barometer within a solid golden oak case measuring 81.5 cm high, 23 cm wide, and 6.5 cm deep. The carved wooden frame displays a Gothic arch pediment, a fan shell motif, detailed acanthus leaf carvings, and a turned mount surrounding the circular brass bezel. The white porcelain dials feature black and red script for weather predictions alongside a thermometer scale, protected behind thick bevelled edge glass. Practical for everyday use in a home today, this wall-mounted instrument fits well on a narrow wall space in a hallway, study, or living room to monitor atmospheric pressure and temperature. The polished golden brown timber shows a warm patina throughout the decorative mountings and balanced proportions.

A Victorian banjo barometer is a wall-mounted instrument shaped like a banjo that traditionally contains an atmospheric pressure gauge and a mercury or spirit thermometer. Popularised during the nineteenth century, these pieces served as functional household weather forecasting instruments and decorative woodwork.

These instruments were typically constructed with solid or veneered timber cases, such as oak, mahogany, or walnut. Internal mechanisms featured brass bezels, glass capillary tubes, enamelled or paper dials, and vacuum-sealed metal aneroid capsules.

Authentic pieces feature hand-carved decorative motifs such as acanthus leaves or shell pediments, age-appropriate patination on the timber and brass, bevelled glass covers, and period typographical fonts on the pressure dial and thermometer scale.

Mount the piece as a focal point on a narrow wall, within a hallway gallery wall, or above a sideboard. Pairing warm carved oak with dark paint backdrops or contemporary muted neutrals creates an effective visual contrast.

Dust the wooden casing regularly with a soft, dry cloth and avoid positioning the instrument near direct heat sources or in direct sunlight. Ensure the brass remains clean without using harsh chemical polishes that could damage surrounding wood finishes.
