FAQs

Victorian chests of drawers date from the reign of Queen Victoria (18371901), a period defined by industrial expansion, diverse revival styles, and a strong emphasis on domestic utility and craftsmanship in British homes.

These pieces were typically constructed from solid hardwoods like mahogany, frequently featuring secondary timbers such as pine or oak for drawer linings and carcases, joined using traditional hand-cut dovetails.

Authenticity is assessed by examining dovetail construction for hand-cut irregularity, checking for original brass or iron hardware, observing timber ageing and patina, and inspecting secondary woods consistent with nineteenth-century manufacturing.

A traditional wooden chest functions effectively as a grounding focal point in a modern bedroom or hallway, providing functional storage while introducing rich timber textures to neutral or minimalist colour palettes.

Preservation involves maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent timber bleaching, and periodically applying quality beeswax polish while avoiding silicone-based commercial sprays.
