This nineteenth-century Victorian chest of drawers brings traditional English Country House character to any interior. Constructed from mahogany with a dark brown timber finish, the piece displays striking flame mahogany veneer across the drawer fronts. The configuration consists of two smaller upper drawers positioned above two wider full-width drawers below. Each drawer is fitted with matching turned wooden knob handles and brass keyhole escutcheons shaped with ornamental detail. Simple rounded moulding frames the top edge, while the base rests solidly on a low plinth with rounded corner feet. The timber surfaces show rich grain patterns and warm polished tones throughout. Measuring 104 cm wide by 53 cm deep and 79 cm high, the proportions offer generous storage capacity while maintaining a manageable footprint. This functional item works well in a bedroom, dressing room, or hallway to store clothing and linens while serving as a sturdy surface for decorative objects.

FAQs

A Victorian chest of drawers typically features robust timber construction, standard configurations such as two short drawers over three long drawers or two over two, and turned wooden handles. These pieces often feature plinth bases, flame mahogany or walnut veneers, and brass keyhole escutcheons reflecting nineteenth-century design aesthetics.

Victorian chests of drawers were predominantly crafted from mahogany, oak, walnut, and pine. Higher-end pieces utilized flame mahogany or burr walnut veneers applied over pine or deal carcases, complemented by solid brass lock mechanisms and turned wooden knobs.

Authentic Victorian chests feature hand-cut or early machine-cut dovetail joints, hand-planed drawer linings, original brass locks, and natural wear around the drawer runners. The back panels are typically pine or deal boards attached with period iron nails or screws.

A Victorian chest of drawers can serve as a focal point in contemporary bedrooms, hallways, or living spaces. Juxtaposing rich mahogany timber with clean modern wall shades, contemporary artwork, or modern lighting creates an engaging contrast between historical craftsmanship and current design.

Mahogany furniture should be kept away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber movement and veneer fading. Regular dusting with a soft dry cloth and periodic applications of high-grade beeswax nourish the wood and preserve the original patina.
