Description

Victorian mahogany campaign chest

This Victorian mahogany campaign chest was made circa 1870.

It would have been purchased by a newly commissioned officer as he was about to go on his overseas posting.

This fine example of a Victorian campaign chest has the rare 3 drawers along the top a further drawer below on the upper part, and then 2 drawers in the lower section, that stand on the original turned feet.

It is made, as would be expected in 2 parts, this was for ease of transport around the world. Each section would be slid into its own packing case for its journeys by ship, wagon, mule or even camels.

It has the flush brass handles and brass straps that were not only for decoration but to protect the chest as it was lifted on its travels.

Imagine the adventures this will have seen, a classic ‘if only it could talk’ piece. It will look fantastic in your home and give you so much pleasure as you show it to your family and friends. Not only is it fantastic on the eye but it also provides so much storage space.

Campaign chests were specifically designed for British military officers on campaign during the 18th, 19th, and early 20th centuries, engineered in two or more sections with recessed brass handles for ease of transport.

These chests are typically crafted from dense timbers such as mahogany or camphor wood to withstand tropical climates, featuring dovetail joints, brass corner brackets, and flush-fitting hardware to prevent snagging during travel.

Authentic pieces usually feature hand-cut dovetails, original brass inset hardware with locking mechanisms, maker stamps, and construction in two distinct stacking sections fitted with carrying brackets on the sides.

A campaign chest works well as a focal storage piece in a bedroom or living area, pairing effectively with contemporary minimalist decor to highlight its rich timber grain and architectural brass details.

Maintain antique mahogany by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources, dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth, and occasionally applying microcrystalline wax to nourish the wood surface.
