Description

This most impressive large scale Black Forest limewood figure is beautifully carved and depicts the full standing figure of a portly monk dressed in a simple habit cheerfully enjoying a large goblet of wine or maybe several judging by his expression. The carving is high quality with good detail and is finished by hand with natural chisel and gouge cuts which have not been sanded. This is a sign of the great skill of the carver and results in a very pleasing and tactile finish which has a very pleasing patination and a waxed high lustre. This large scale carving is in very good original condition with no repairs or restoration.

Dealers Notes

Robert Belcher Antiques was established in 1984 and is a high-quality retailer of interesting, rare antiques and decorative objects. After forty years of shop keeping and maintaining beautiful showrooms, which have been regularly open six days a week, Robert and Wendy have now taken a slightly different approach to their business. Having sold their retail premises, the antique business is now fully online. The picture framing service has ceased to operate because of moving online.

You can contact Robert and Wendy by email or telephone to discuss items from their extensive catalogue of attractive pieces and make purchases. Customers can rest assured that the long-established dealership is continuing to run in an exceedingly professional way, selling genuine and high-quality items which are guaranteed to please the most discerning collector, decorator or homeowner.

All items will be personally hand packaged to a high standard. Small items are extensively wrapped using the best materials and are often double boxed. Items are then shipped with DHL or Royal Mail fully insured and often with next day delivery. Larger items would be personally delivered or sent with a specialist antique delivery firm, or for outside the U.K, a professional shipping company.

Please enjoy viewing their collection of rare and interesting pieces and have the assurance that Robert and Wendy will do their utmost to make sure your experience is exceptional, as has been recognised by many customers who have bought with confidence regularly over the years.

Black Forest woodcarving refers to intricate wooden sculptures produced primarily in the Brienz region of Switzerland and the Black Forest region of Germany during the 19th and early 20th centuries, renowned for wildlife and character studies.

Carvers typically utilised native softwoods such as limewood, pearwood, and walnut, valued for their fine grain and suitability for deep, detailed hand-chiselling.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved tool marks, rich patination from ageing wax, anatomically expressive facial features, and are predominantly carved from a single block or securely doweled sections of limewood or walnut.

These characterful pieces add warmth and narrative depth when placed upon bookshelves, desk tops, or mantelpieces, contrasting effectively against minimalist or industrial backdrops.

Maintain the finish by dusting gently with a soft, dry brush and occasionally applying a micro-crystalline wax to protect the timber, avoiding water, harsh chemical cleaners, and direct sunlight.
